New York began with possession of the ball, allowing Lawrence Tynes to open the score for his team with a spectacular 30-yard field goal. Dallas was quick on its toes, though; the team advanced strongly using dangerous plays that pushed those forwards 62 yards. Marion Barber took Dallas farther for a 2-yard touchdown.
The Giants took the ball for three plays before the Cowboys recovered it - but not for long. Dallas Quarterback Tony Romo was intercepted by rookie Bruce Johnson, who raced 34 yards to score the second touchdown and pushed the score 10-7 in favor of the Giants. The play closed the first quarter.

In the final quarter, Steve Smith scored a touchdown for the Giants, bringing the score to 27-24; then Tynes added on the points, another 3-point field goal bringing the score to 30-24. The Cowboys managed a touchdown that gave them another 7 points, giving them a 1-point lead in the intense, closing minutes of the match. But Tynes returned to save the Giants yet again; his field goal gave New York the 3 points necessary to dispatch the Dallas team in its brand-new stadium, 33-31.
"I think we definitely wanted to win this one, extra motivation," Romo said. "It's frustrating. I'm just really, really disappointed in myself right now."
