WEEK 7
I'm not one to erroneously label a game as a "must win" unless, mathematically, a team actually must win it to stay alive.
Mathematically, this game is not a "must win" for Dallas. Emotionally, however, it might be just that. Can this team truly come back from a 1-4 start to make the playoffs (and not just make the post-season, but win there)? Of course it's possible, but realistically, this week's game in Minnesota is about as close to "must win" as it gets in Week Six.
This week, the Cowboys will have the opportunity to begin to prove me wrong. While I don't think the hole they've dug themselves is insurmountable, I do think that will be the case if they continue to play as they have thus far. Can the Cowboys really flip the switch and begin playing disciplined, selfless football? Monday can't get here soon enough.
With one win in their first five games, the 2010 season has been a total disaster so far for the Dallas Cowboys. To let them tell it, they are befuddled by their struggles and utterly shocked by their disappointing play in a season that was supposed to be "Super." The message now is one play at a time, one game at a time, in hopes of getting out of their 1-4 hole. If the Cowboys let this season slip away, a bigger picture will start to crystallize. They are no longer just playing for a dream -- a Super Bowl title run in 2010. When they take the field against the New York Giants on Monday night, each Cowboys player will be playing for his future in Dallas.

Jerry Jones is paying more money in salaries this season than any other owner in the NFL. He did so because of his desire to play in Super Bowl XLV, which is being played at Cowboys Stadium. So his disappointment in the horrible start is deep and could become grave if the Cowboys don't right themselves. The uncertainty surrounding the coaching staff is a given. If the Cowboys don't somehow turn it around, coach Wade Phillips likely won't be back. But it's not just about him this time; it could be an entire housecleaning. A new coach would certainly want to pick his own staff, and given the controversy and divisiveness wrought by Jones' decision to hire offensive coordinator Jason Garrett before he hired the head coach, Jones might want to stand down this time
But the players better look in the mirror as well. Many of them might not be back either. The contracts of five starters are up after the season, including defensive end Marcus Spears, left tackle Doug Free, left guard Kyle Kosier and safeties Gerald Sensabaugh and Alan Ball. Only Free is assured of being back in 2011. Sensabaugh was being considered for a long-term deal before the season. It's not a priority now, according to the Cowboys' brass. The aging Kosier missed the opener with a sprained knee and is out two to three weeks with a strained Achilles'. If Montrae Holland continues to play solidly in his stead, the move could be permanent in 2011.
Other players whose contracts are up after the season are defensive ends Stephen Bowen and Jason Hatcher, receiver Sam Hurd, offensive tackle Alex Barron and tight end Scott Chandler. There are no automatics on that list, either. The Cowboys like Bowen and Hatcher as backups, but they are not paying a premium to keep them with multi-year deals. What they do with Spears is going to impact the decision here. Again, this list doesn't include aging tackle Marc Colombo and guard Leonard Davis, who are signed through 2012 and 2013, respectively. The Cowboys could target a tackle in the 2011 draft, putting the injury-plagued Colombo on notice.
Of course, Davis was sent a message two weeks ago when he was benched against the Tennessee Titans for Holland. It was an eye-opener for the Cowboys, who might be forced to re-think their decision to make him the highest-paid offensive lineman in club history with a $49.6 million contract. Davis has played pretty well since signing with the Cowboys as a free agent in 2007, making three consecutive Pro Bowls. Past success will mean nothing going forward if the Cowboys continue to slump and Davis doesn't get back to an all-star level. There's an old saying in football that certainly applied when the Cowboys released Terrell Owens two years ago: "If they are going to miss the playoffs with you, they can miss the playoffs without you and also save a few million dollars on your contract.
"I can't worry about that," Davis said. "If we don't get it done and they make changes, they will make changes with personnel. If there is a new coach, he is going to want to bring his guys in. Right now, that is something I can't worry about. That is reality. I have seen it when I was in Arizona. For that to happen here, it would not be a surprise." The winner in all this is Holland, who didn't play a down in 2009 and could be looked at as a possible starter next season for either Kosier or Davis. The situation is the same for running back Marion Barber. He has not lived up to expectations since signing a $45 million contract in 2008. While Barber remains the starter, he has been replaced as the featured back by Felix Jones. The Cowboys will likely not be inclined to keep paying him millions to be a short-yardage back when they have the capable and cheaper Tashard Choice.
"You can't worry about that," Barber said. "You have to live for today. I'm just focused on helping this team get a win next week." The ironic thing is the player who entered the season with the biggest target on his back -- receiver Roy Williams -- is finally playing like a keeper. It will be hard for Williams to live up to his $9 million annual salary and fans' expectations after being acquired from Detroit for a bushel of draft picks. But he has been one of the Cowboys' biggest bright spots this year -- he has a team-leading five touchdown receptions -- making the possibility of him remaining in the receiver mix with Miles Austin and the talented, but still raw, Dez Bryant very legitimate.
The good news for Williams is that if the Cowboys do part ways with him he has repaired his image enough to get another decent payday elsewhere. At the end of the season, he would have already pocketed more than $28 million in guaranteed money from the Cowboys. Who would have thought that Williams would come out as the big winner if the Cowboys ended the biggest losers in 2010? The Cowboys probably won't make moves with all of these players in the off-season, but their disappointing play so far has put everything on the table. LIVETV
Cowboys Stadium is a domed stadium with a retractable roof in Arlington, Texas. It serves as the home of the National Football League's Dallas Cowboys. It replaced the partially-covered Texas Stadium, which opened in 1971, and served as the Cowboys' home through the 2008 season. It was completed on May 27, 2009. The stadium seats 80,000, making it the fourth largest stadium in the NFL by seating capacity. The maximum capacity of the stadium, including standing room, is 110,000. The Party Pass (open areas) sections are behind seats in each end zone and on a series of six elevated platforms connected by stairways.
Parking Availability
There are approximately 12,000 parking spaces distributed among 15 numbered lots at Cowboys Stadium. In addition, there are nearly 12,000 parking spaces in the lettered lots around the Texas Rangers Ballpark that will be used on game day.
Designated Lot
If you have purchased parking in advance for the game, you will have a pass for a designated lot. The parking pass is valid only for the lot designated on the pass.
Customized Route and Directions
The Cowboys have created an online tool that will provide you with directions to the stadium and to your specific parking lot. Visit www.dallascowboysmaps.com and enter the zip code of where you are starting from and select your assigned parking lot. If you plan to pay cash when parking, select "cash" instead of a specific lot. You will receive personalized directions and route map. By following the directions provided, you will avoid traffic delays and get parked quickly. We discourage the use of GPS systems or other map websites as they do not take into account current road conditions and the traffic plan developed exclusively for Cowboys Stadium.
Directional Signs
As you approach the stadium, there will be additional highway, street and electronic message signs directing you along your route and to your parking lot entrance.
Directed Parking
Once you enter your lot, you will be directed into a parking spot. By following the direction of the parking staff you will get parked quickly and safely. A parking pass is valid for one (1) spot and parking spots are for vehicles only. If you want to park near a friend, you must have parking passes for the same lot and arrive together. Parking spots cannot be reserved or saved for guests arriving at a later time.
Parking Spots are for Vehicles Only
Parking spots are for vehicles only. Drive aisles must remain clear at all times. No items (coolers, tents, tables, chairs, etc.) of any kind may be placed on the ground behind, in front of or around parked vehicles. These items are permitted only in designated tailgating spaces.
Tailgating Spaces
Tailgating is permitted in designated tailgating spaces only. These spaces are on the perimeter of each parking lot and have a grassy area immediately behind the vehicle parking spot. There are tailgating spaces in every lot. Tailgating spaces are available on a first come/first served basis. Guests parked in a designated tailgating space must restrict their use of the grass to the space behind their vehicle. You may not spread out and use the grass area behind other tailgating parking spaces.
Tailgating Guidelines
All guests wishing to tailgate must observe the following guidelines. These guidelines have been developed to provide a fair, reasonable and safe tailgating experience for guests. Failure to follow these guidelines may result in the loss of tailgating privileges and ejection from the parking lot.
+ Tailgating spaces are for vehicles and trailers only. Parking spaces may not be used for tents, grills, chairs or other items. Each vehicle or trailer must have a valid parking permit.
+ Tailgating is defined as the placement of any item on the ground (chairs, coolers, grills, games, etc.).
+ Tailgating is only permitted in the grass areas on the perimeter of the parking lots. The maximum area that any single tailgate space may occupy is 9 feet wide and 12 feet deep (equal to the size of the vehicle parking space).
+ Tailgating must be confined to the area adjacent to the end of the designated tailgating vehicle parking space (maximum of 18 feet from the rear of the parked vehicle).
+ Any grass areas beyond the designated tailgating spaces is considered common ground and may be used by other guests for tailgating or picnicking activities.
+ Tailgating is not permitted in Lot 3, portions of Lot 5, Lot 8, and Lot 9.
+ Tailgating is permitted from the time that lots open and up to two (2) hours following Dallas Cowboys or college football games.
+ All guests must follow the directions and instructions provided by stadium personnel (parking staff, security, police, etc.).
+ Dispose of trash in the appropriate receptacles.
+ Coals must be disposed of in the designated coal containers located throughout the lots. Do not dump coals or store stoves on the grass, parking areas, under or around vehicles.
